Is the Indoor
Tanning the same as tanning outside in the sun? When you tan at an
indoor facility, your skin produces tan the same way it does when you are
out in the sun: through the use of UV light. There is one huge difference
— when you are out in the sun you cannot control the amount of UV light
you are exposed to, because it is affected by changes in the atmosphere,
Indoor tanning is one way to regulate the amount of UV light you are
exposed to, because it is a controlled environment. You can gradually
increase you exposure time to achieve the tan you desire without burning.
How do the
beds work? Tanning beds basically imitate the sun. The sun emits 3
types of UV rays, UV-C, UV-B, and UV-A. UV-C has the shortest wavelength
of the three, and is also the most harmful. It's absorbed by the Earth's
ozone layer and pollution. Tanning Lamps filter out this type of light.
UV-B is the middle wavelength and starts the tanning process by
penetrating the skin and stimulating the cells that produce melanin (the
stuff that makes you tan). UV-A has the longest wavelength and completes
the process by oxidizing or "browning" the melanin that has been produced.
Tanning lamps use the best ratio of UV-B and UV-A light to provide tanning
results with a lowered risk of overexposure.
Will I get
tan? Frankly that depends on the type of skin you have. Normally,
a person tans indoors only as well as he or she is able to tan outdoors
from the sun. So if you never tan from the sun you will not from tanning
lamps either, and we'll recommend that you do no attempt to, since they
emit the very same type of rays.
How long
before I see something? Everyone differs in this area because it
depends upon your skin type. Usually, you will begin to notice results
after a few tanning sessions. Don't be disappointed if you don't see
something the very first time, this is normal and quite common. Your tan
will develop gradually, but it may take a few weeks of regular tanning (at
least three times a week) to get the color you're looking for.
How often
should I tan? In order to build a solid tan, it is important to tan
regularly. Don't let too much time go by between visits or your tan will
begin to fade. You can tan up to once every 24 hours, but it is generally
recommended that you wait 48 hours between sessions to allow your tan to
fully develop. You can build your tan by tanning three to four times a
week. Once you have your tan you can maintain it with one to three visits
a week.
What do I
wear?
Basically you can wear whatever you feel like wearing. This is truly
a personal preference question. Some tan in shorts, underwear, bathing
suit or (GASP!) nothing at all. You wear whatever makes you most comfortable.
Do I need to
wear lotion when tanning indoors? You don't need to wear SPF
lotion when tanning indoors because these lotions are designed to allow
you to spend a longer amount of time in the sun. When you tan indoors with
a controlled exposure time you don't need SPF. You should avoid using
outdoor lotions and oils when you tan indoors. These products will make
the acrylic dirty and actually hinder your tanning. Using indoor tanning
lotions are not a necessity, but they can dramatically increase your
results. These products are specifically designed for indoor tanning, they
help moisturize your skin while helping you to tan faster.
